Find a college

Selecting a college can be one of the most overwhelming decisions a person can make in his lifetime. It takes a bit of time and effort to find a college, and it is wise to educate yourself before finally taking that giant leap and settling on school that is right for you.

One way to narrow your college pursuit is through college search engines via the world wide web. These engines allow you to find a college according to detailed criterion such as academics, location, and even campus life.

Two prominent college search engines are the Princeton Review Counselor-O-Matic (www.princetonreview.com) and Peterson's College Search Engine (www.petersons.com).

The Counselor-O-Matic has different slant on the traditional college search engine. This unique website provides the user with an online survey testing academic, social, and athletic skills, and then creating a listing of colleges that suit that user the best. This easy to use search engine is a fun way to find a college.

Peterson's College Search is a terrific way to find a college, but not quite as user friendly as the Princeton Review. This more conventional engine allows you to search for a school by size, grade point average, location, major, and tuition.

The college tour allows you to see the school in all it's glory. It will give you the chance to visit the buildings you will be taking classes in and the dorms you may be living in. It is advisable to do a little research about the school beforehand, and have a few questions prepared for your tour guide. You may want to consider such topics as class size, dorm and Greek life, food, and sports. While some colleges just allow the potential student to show up for a tour, others request that you make an appointment. Before setting off on a road trip, call the campus and find out tour rules and policies.
